There was indeed a time when lions roamed free in Attica, and bears were not a such a rare sight.

In 1931, the water of two torrents, Charadros and Varnavas, was used to create the Marathon Reservoir an artificial lake to be used as the main water supply for the region of Attica and the still growing town of Athens.

Tennis has seen increasing popularity in Greece over the past few decades, and the wider Marathon area seems to be a haven for professional athletes, conditioned players, and curious amateurs alike.

When one thinks of a holiday in Greece, tennis is not among the first options to spring to mind; when it comes to this sport, however, the region of Eastern Attica is home to some quite impressive facilities, where amateur to professional tournaments are organised and players of all ranks and ages are able to practice in the midst of stunning natural surroundings.

The only prerequisite for great beach volley is great sand, and the Blue Flag beach of Karavi has more than enough quality sand to please the fun- and fitness-loving crowd, bringing visitors to the area one step closer to sun-kissed summer bliss.

Horseback riding is a unique experience, a rare opportunity to bond with nature through another living creature even more so in an area of such natural beauty as Marathon.

The Battle of Marathon was a defining moment in Greek history, one that would become a symbol to guide the people through its darkest times, in antiquity and well into the modern era.

At the bottom of the sea between the islands Kea and Makronisos lies the wreck of one of the largest ships ever constructed, the Britannic. Sister ship of the infamous Titanic, it sank shortly after its launch during the World War I.
