The Tumulus of Marathon
The small sanctuary dates back to the 6th century BCE and was originally dedicated to the local heros hiatros (healing hero) Aristomachus, who possessed the attributes of healing and foresight. During the 4th century BCE, the initial hero cult was replaced by the cult of Amphiaraus, probably as a result of the close contact with the nearby polis of Thebes, where that hero was already gloriously worshipped at a local necromanteion.
