The region is famed for its oranges of the Merlin variety, which ripen in winter time. However, it also produces juicy Valencias, from the end of March until late September. So, summer visitors to the area have the opportunity of sampling oranges freshly picked from the trees.
Most of the citrus trees are in Archaia (Palaia) and Nea Epidavros. Their cultivation is favoured by the microclimate of these areas, which are warmer due to their proximity to Methana, which is of volcanic origin.
In fact, the groves less than 3km. from the sea are said to yield the tastiest fruits. Citrus trees can be seen in other settlements too.
All kinds of citrus cultivars flourish in Epidavros. Along with oranges there are also tangerines, lemons, grapefruits, citrons, pomelos, bergamots, kumquats and limes. In the lemon groves you will see lemons and lemon blossom together, as some varieties are everbearing, such as the Adamopoulos lemon trees which blossom and bear fruit almost all year round.
The Municipality of Epidavros is relatively small, with a population of about 9,500. Thus, the citrus harvest is small and the fruits are sold in the local market and the neighbourhood markets of Athens. Producers supplement their income with other crops (olives, fruits, etc.) or occupations (tourism, agritourism).
