A railway station is a place that we can see a variety of feelings and reactions! Happiness associated with laughs and smiles is continuously alternates with sadness, anguish and melancholy usually expressed with cries and dark faces especially by those who leave their homes.
The railways of Greece have a strong background that begun in 1869. The social and economic structure of Greece at the end of 19th century depended on small agriculture cities which have to communicate with some way. However, the lack of internal and external communication through the roads make the government to think about the development of the railway system! Few years later the first railway lines are fact! The 4th of july1884 was the inaugural date for the main itinerary between Athens and Peloponnisos.
The railway station, built at the same year, is considered one of the oldest building of modern Eleusina. The building had a passenger’s room, a warehouse for the parcels, a ticket office and a room for the station master, the person who was in charge for the right function of the station. The meaning of its construction was huge for this date and many hotels, restaurants and shops were built near the station with the view to make passenger’s life easier. It was obvious that the center of Eleysina had been transmitted around the railway station!
On the occasion of “Eleusis 21”, the project that Eleusina does for its re-construction to hosts the institution of the cultural capital of Europe in 2021, the old railway station was restored by the locals. The fresh-painted, cleaned and lit railway station reminds its historical value!
