Traveling centuries behind, the exedra was probably used as an observation post for the dromena took place during the festival of Eleusinian Mysteries. So far so good. The curious point is exactly in front of the exedra up to the Processional Way.
There is a bulge in the ground which projecting above its surface, preventing the normal crossing of the way and provoke the attention of the visitors who pacing the road. A possible explanation for this strange phenomenon was given if we though that this bulge consists one of the sacred point of the site and still uncarved cause its sacred meaning.
It has been identified as the Agelastos Petra, on which according to a later tradition mentioned by Callimachus poet, Demeter sat down to rest when she arrived at Eleusis or by some accounts graved about her daughter’s abduction. Scientists have claimed that the pilgrims sat on the exedra, maybe observed the priestess of Demeter to pretend the sullen goddess. However, years later, the monument was a strong inspiration for the director Filipos Koutsaftis who create a documentary devoted to Eleusina and entitle it “The agelastos petra” – “The sullen stone”.
