The settlement is built on the ruins of the ancient polis of Leuctron where, according to Pausanias, stood an impressive temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The castle of the polis was reconstructed by the Franks and renamed Beaufort, after a nobleman who lived in the area during the Frankish rule. Those of you who have read Nikos Kazantzakis' novel Alexis Zorbas may see something familiar in Stoupa, as the author lived there when he wrote it and was, according to the locals, inspired by the wild beauty of the scenery.
Two famous beaches attract hundreds of visitors every summer: Stoupa, the natural beach of the village, and Kalogria. After your dip, roam the narrow cobbled stones and make sure to stay until sunset, which is rumoured to be one of the most impressive in continental Greece.
