Any reference to political or economic power was indisputably attached to sea relations either as commercial or military powers almost for all the ancient Greek cities – states. Even from prehistoric period the most powerful Mediterranean civilizations such as the Minoans attribute their material and spiritual power to their strong sea relations with other parallel civilizations. Years later, in antiquity, the importance of a port was still the same!
Archaeological evidences have shown that Eleusina has one of the oldest ports in Europe dated from Classical period (500 BC). It played a dominant role in Eleusina’s profile configuration as it helped the economy with products transformation to or from the land and of course with the acceptance of foreign population after the Asian minor disaster in 1922.So, the plants built towards the coastal line took the advantage of port’s existence in order to extract their products to other nearby or distant ports. Also, the multiculturalism of city’s population and its spiritual growth is partially due to the port’s reputation. Moreover, the creation of two shipyards on Eleusina’s coastal line was a dominant factor for its final form.
Huge ships and building facilities were standing for years impairing and polluting the whole environment. Nowadays, the municipality of Eleusina runs a master plan for the port’s reconstruction and it have taken important measures for the pollution reduction. Eleusina’s port goals to a full-functional environmental friendly place which can combine its historical and commercial background.
