Looking a glimpse in the past and reading the excavation’s minutes, you can only solve the mystery with the modern house. It is truly connected with the name Dimitris Philios, the archaeologist who began the first systematic excavation in Eleusina. He had accent almost from the first days of the excavation that the need of a storage place for the archaeological finds was a matter of necessity. So he used the house, that according to written records belongs to a general of the army, as a gathering and protection place forthe antiquities. Also he used a wing of the house for his residence at the time that he was the head of the excavations.
So, the house has a strong background as it constitutes the oldest dwelling of Eleusina and the only one that stands today after the expropriation of the old village which was extended within the walls of the site. Considering its key role played during the first excavations and its characterization as the first museum of the site, given to the most of the old plots, we can understand why it’s so important for the site’s total view.
We can call it as a modern monument as it includes the whole history and the background of site’s excavations. Thinking about the offer and help that gave to the old excavators then we can easily approve its harmonic existence near to the sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone.
