On I. Romanou 4 str., almost near Corfu Old Town, someone can visit the famous centenarian “Corfu Lawn Tennis Club”. The strong connection between tennis and the island of Corfu is undeniable and last through the years. Tennis appeared in Greece for the first time during the period the island was under British rule. The “Lawn Tennis Club” society was established in the island almost thirty years after the union of the Ionian State with Greece (1896). Its founders were young, mostly upper class, men.
Later on and through the years the “Lawn Tennis Club” created its own history, providing up to now, high-quality tennis courses to residents and visitors. In 1995, a landmark date for the club, the main reconstruction effort begun, occasioned by the revival of great tennis events that started on the island, as the “Greek Cup” in August 1996.
