Museum of Modern Sparti
The museum is housed in a two-storey neoclassical building, which belongs to the Cultural Society and the Municipality of Sparti. On the first floor, the Cultural Society of Sparti has founded a Museum toshowcase the history and development of the modern city from its re-establishment, in 1834,to the present. The ground floor hosts a lecture room, where cultural and various academic events are held, while the basement is often used for art and photography exhibitions.
"Koumantareios" Art Gallery
Housed in a beautiful neoclassical building of the early 20thcentury,the gallery was inaugurated in 1982 and has since operated as a subsidiary of the National Gallery, with fourteen oil paintings by West European painters in its permanent exhibition, spanning from the last decades of the 16thcentury to the beginning of the 20th century. The venue often hosts temporary exhibitions of selected works from the National Gallery, in an effort to make Modern Greek painting more widely known to local audiences. Great importance is attached to the educational role of the projects, and the educational programs organised by the gallery are addressed to pupils and students of all grades, as well as to specific audiences and social groups participating in life-long learning schemes.
Botanical and Geological Museum of Taygetos
This small museum is situated in the village of Anavryti and housed at the premises of the old primary school. It boasts an interesting botanical collection, which consists of reference tables, sketches and photographs of the vegetation zones of Mount Taygetos, as well as of the indigenous and rare species of flora. This bijou of a museum is an important hub of information for those who wish to get a firm knowledge of the natural surroundings of the area. Visits, however, are arranged upon request.
"Takis Aivalis" Museum of Photographic Cameras
Originally a traditional building in Mystras, the structure was converted to become a modern museum dedicated to cameras and the evolution of the art of photography. Visitors have a unique opportunity to admire an extensive collection of old camera models by the most important manufacturers of the past, along with aerial photography cameras once used by the US Army to create maps and provide photographic depictions and data for entire regions.
Manousakeio Museum
Housed in a typical, two-storey neoclassical building constructed in the early 20thcenturyand organised according to modern museological standards, the museum focuses on urban and folk life in Sparti during the 20thcentury. Exhibits include furniture, costumes, embroidery, glassware, as well as many photographs.
Museum of Ecclesiastical Art
Located opposite the imposing metropolitan church of Evangelistria (=Our Lady of the Annunciation),the museum houses an impressive collection of icons (including some rare Russian icons from the17thand 19thcenturies), exquisite silver and gold jewellery, rare manuscript codes and several written canons.
